360Eyes Won't Play Videos? Playback Timeline, Decryption Failed & Export Guide
360Eyes won't play videos or shows video decryption failed? Learn timeline navigation, Cloud vs TF switching, real fixes, and honest export limitations.
If 360Eyes won't play videos, first check three things: that you're on the right date in the date picker, the right source (Cloud vs TF toggle), and that Encryption Mode hasn't changed since the footage was recorded. Those three cover the vast majority of playback failures, including the dreaded "video decryption failed" error. Here's how the playback screen actually works, and what to do when it doesn't.
How the 360Eyes playback timeline works
Open the camera from the Devices list and switch to playback. On most 360Eyes cameras you'll see:
- A date picker — playback only ever shows one day at a time. Days that contain recordings are usually marked; pick the day first, then look for footage.
- A horizontal timeline — recorded periods appear as colored segments on a 24-hour strip. Drag (scrub) left or right to move through the day, and pinch or zoom controls (where available) to change the time scale for finer scrubbing.
- A Cloud/TF source toggle — this is the one people miss. TF shows recordings on the microSD card inside the camera; Cloud shows event clips uploaded under a Cloud Storage plan. The two lists are completely independent: footage on the card never appears under Cloud, and vice versa. If the timeline looks empty, always check the other source before assuming nothing recorded.
Playback streams from the camera (or the cloud) to your phone in real time, so it needs a working connection. If live view won't load, playback won't either — fix connectivity first.
Fixing "360Eyes video decryption failed"
The 360Eyes app supports an Encryption Mode setting that encrypts recorded video so it can only be played by an authorized account. "Video decryption failed" generally means the app can't unlock footage with the credentials it currently has. Common triggers:
- The camera was reset or re-paired after the footage was recorded. Old encrypted clips may no longer decrypt for the new pairing. There is, as far as we can tell, no supported way to recover them — this is worth knowing before you reset.
- You're signed into a different account than the one the camera was bound to when recording. Sign back into the original account and try again.
- A shared user is trying to play encrypted footage. Depending on version, shared/family accounts may not be able to decrypt clips that the owner's account encrypted. Have the owner play the clip.
- A glitch. Sometimes the error is transient — force-close the app, reopen, and retry. Updating to the latest 360Eyes for iOS or 360Eyes Pro for Android resolves some decryption complaints.
If you don't need encryption, consider turning Encryption Mode off in the camera's settings going forward. That won't fix clips already encrypted, but it prevents the problem from recurring.
When the timeline is empty or won't play at all
Work through these in order:
- Pick the right date in the date picker — the app may default to today.
- Toggle between Cloud and TF and check both sources.
- Confirm the TF card is detected under the camera's TF card Recording Settings. No card, or an unreadable card, means an empty TF timeline. See motion detection not recording for card troubleshooting.
- Check your connection. Remote playback over a weak link often stalls on a spinner. Try on the same WiFi as the camera; if it plays locally but not remotely, the problem is bandwidth, not the recordings.
- Power-cycle the camera. A camera that has been online for weeks can stop serving playback until rebooted.
Known timeline limitations and workarounds
Being honest: the playback experience is one of the weaker parts of this app, and several limitations come up repeatedly in user reviews.
| Limitation | Workaround |
|---|---|
| Scrubbing is imprecise; small drags can jump minutes | Zoom the timeline in (where supported) or replay from slightly before the moment you want |
| Seeking is slow; each jump rebuffers from the camera | Be patient after each scrub — give it several seconds before scrubbing again |
| Event clips are short; context before/after motion is missing | Enable continuous (24/7) TF recording instead of event-only mode |
| One day at a time; no multi-day search | None — note dates of incidents promptly so you know which day to open |
| Cloud and TF can't be viewed together | Check both sources manually via the toggle |
Exporting and saving clips — the honest part
Media export is a known sore point with 360Eyes, and you should set expectations accordingly:
- The app generally lets you record the playback stream to your phone (and take snapshots) while a clip is playing — in effect re-capturing it in real time. A two-minute clip takes two minutes to save. There is no bulk download of a day's footage from within the app on most versions.
- Saved quality matches the stream, so a clip exported over a poor connection may look worse than the original recording.
- Reading the TF card directly in a computer is unreliable. Some cameras write standard files you can open; others use a proprietary layout or encrypted files (especially with Encryption Mode on) that desktop players can't read. Don't count on the card as an export path until you've tested it on your model.
- As a last resort, screen-record your phone during playback. It's clumsy, but it always works and is often the fastest way to share a clip.
- If you need reliable, standards-based access to footage, check whether your camera's ONVIF option lets it work with third-party NVR software — behavior varies by model, so test before relying on it.
If footage matters legally or for insurance, export it as soon as possible: loop recording will eventually overwrite it, and resets can render encrypted clips unrecoverable (see the reset guide before resetting a camera with important footage on it).
